Safely home, and, as I have been for the last few days, struggling to put into words exactly what it is about Dubai that made it feel so comfortable, so much like a potential home. Perhaps it's something about the way the city stands with one foot - literally - in the desert, and the other, equally literally, in the sea. Maybe that's what it was. It's not the desert and the sea that are bred into my blood and bone, not the red earth of Jaffna or the Indian Ocean, but it's the desert and the sea that spoke to me when I was forming my first memories, and it's familiar. There's something about it that felt right, in the way that Canada did not, no matter how much I liked the place. The way that London will, when the memory of the desert and the sea has time to fade a little.
I think there might be a poem in there somewhere too.
